The oldest Christian monasteries are those of St. Anthony and St. Paul, which date back to the fourth century AD when monks first settled in secret caverns and cliffs at the base of Galala Al-Qibliya, a mountain overlooking the Red Sea. The two monasteries are regarded as the most sacred locations for the Coptic Church in Egypt.
Take part in this fascinating tour to one of the world's oldest monasteries. See the shrine dedicated to Saint Anthony, constructed in the third century, and the neighboring monastery housing the Cave Church of Saint Paul, which houses the relics of the hermit said to be the youngest.
Following our hotel pickup, we will travel 240 kilometers to reach our destination.
The Coptic Orthodox tradition is honored at the Monastery of Saint Anthony.
The Cave Churc is hidden in the heart of the neighboring Monastery of Saint Paul.
It's noteworthy to note that St. Anthony too lived his entire life in a cave. We're talking about ninety years in his situation!
In order to restore some of the damaged pieces, conservation work was done here between 1997 and 2005.
